SAY A PRAYER for Mr Chua Kim Yeow, who is critically ill in the Singapore General Hospital. Mr Chua, 90, has been a part of the Stamford Tyres family for the past 25 years in various roles - including Chairman and, recently, Senior Adviser. That’s far longer than he had served previously as Executive Chairman of POSB, or President of DBS, or Chairman of the Stock Exchange of Singapore. Warded in the same hospital now is Mr S R Nathan, who is also critically ill at the age of 92. While Mr Nathan served as the President of Singapore from 1999 to 2011, Mr Chua stood for presidency in 1993, losing to Mr Ong Teng Cheong (who served from 1993 to 1999). In his own career, Mr Chua has held high office -- including posts such as Accountant-General with the Ministry of Finance, and Chairman of the Securities Industry Council from 1981 to 1993. His counsel was sought by blue-chip companies: he was Director of the Asia Pacific Breweries (Jul 1990 - Mar 1994), Singapore Press Holdings (1985 - Mar 1994) and City Developments (Feb 1991-Mar 1994).
