There's this article circulating on the Web, which estimated that the av income in SG for workers is $9K+. This is of course correct mathematically but wrong/nonsensical in reality.
Let me illustrate with a hypothetical household where the average income per member is said to be xxx.
The man earns $1 m, the wife $5,000, the adult son is a loafer & earns nothing, the helper earns $500. Thus the total is $1,005,500 and the average per member is ....$251K. See, this utterly distorts the picture.
Likewise, in SG, people like Wee Cho Yaw, Kuek Leng Beng, Gupta of DBS.... these people earn >$10 m a year. At the other extreme, the hawker centre cleaner earns $10,000 a year or thereabouts.... Average figures are just statistical nonsense. The median figure is more useful . In SG, it is $3,770. Do you earn higher than this?
