renfredpicks8.15RENFRED TAY, in his younger days, was a fast-sailing sailor in Singapore's national team, returning home from the 2006 Asian Games in Doha with five gold medals.

The team's efforts and ability won a mention in the Prime Minister's National Day Rally the next year: "This is the Singapore spirit which will see us through as we remake our nation and build our home together."

Renfred won a Singapore National Olympic Council Meritorious Award in 2007 -- and proving that he has brain as well as brawn, went on to earn a Bachelor of Accountancy degree from the Singapore Management University in 2011.

These days, as an analyst with KGI Fraser, he sails through the finance landscape in search of gems of stocks.

And he has just been featured in a full-page article by writer Joan Ng in this week's edition of The Edge Singapore, talking about his top picks.

There are four -- Innovalues, AP Oil, Valuetronics and China Sunsine.

For the story, you may buy a copy of The Edge Singapore for $5 from the news-stands.

Interestingly, he is all for China Sunsine -- but first he had to overcome a lot of concerns surrounding such China companies.

He said: "We did a lot of extra work in trying to assess the qualty of this company."

His verdict: "I think it might be even more transparent than some of the local companies. For instance, every quarter, they tell you the sales volume of their products. You can work out the average selling prices and benchmark these against the market prices that we observe."
