EVERYONE HELD his breath – and then came the fantastic moments when the massive structure smoothly slid into the water off the construction site in Batam of Drydocks World – Southeast Asia Pte Ltd.

The company yesterday (Mar 30) announced that it has successfully launched Hull L203 NAGA 3, its third Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit (MODU).

“Mobile offshore drilling unit” is a generic term for several classes of self-contained floatable or floating drilling machines such as jackups, semisubmersibles, and submersibles.

L203 NAGA 3 is being built for UMW Standard Drilling, a joint venture company formed between UMW Corp Sdn Bhd of Malaysia and Standard Drilling ASA of Norway.

L203 NAGA 3 is the third of a series of four identical MODUs under construction at the Graha yard of Drydocks. There are also two MSC designed Service Jacks under construction at the Graha yard for Master Marine ASA.

“Drydocks World – Graha has again proven itself to be capable of meeting the highest technical standards required to build sophisticated offshore rigs. As part of the overall established Group, we will continue to focus on our key capabilities to attract more offshore businesses to our specialist yard,” said Mr Denis Welch, Chief Executive Officer, Drydocks World – Southeast Asia Pte Ltd.

Mr Mark Biggs, Managing Director of Drydocks World - Graha, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation for the hard work and dedication of our Graha team, the client’s site team and our vendors and partners throughout the world.

“This marks another significant milestone in our building of a track record as one of the key rig-building players in the region. Similar to the two previous hulls, this event is achieved with an enviable safety performance to date and demonstrates that Graha can undertake technically advanced projects with OH&S at the forefront of our activities at all times.

“Based on a similar level of commitment, we look forward to the delivery of our first rig within this series around 4 weeks from today.”

L203 NAGA 3 is a new generation MSC CJ46-X100-D MODU with specifications of 350ft Cantilever (possible to upgrade to 375ft), 30,000ft drilling depth, equipped for high pressure high temperature (HPHT) drilling environment, large VDL, bigger deck space with 70ft and 20ft X-Y cantilever (highest in industry) and installed with automated pipe racking system.

L203 NAGA 3 conforms to the latest standard of MODU requirements.

Drydocks World is firmly established as a leading and fast growing international player in rig building, shipbuilding, ship repair, conversion, offshore fabrication and fleet operations with facilities in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
