GOOD CROWD, good food, good entertainment – and so it was at Stamford Tyres’ Chinese New Year celebration for over 200 guests last week.

There were bankers and other important folks but the (unofficial) VIP was, of course, the God of Fortune, who went around handing out hongbaos with Toto tickets to grateful nods, while hawkers were equally appreciated for cooking up favourites such as roti prata, claypot rice, and satay.

On top of that, there was a waistline-busting buffet spread. And your thirst for champagne and wine would be quenched almost magically - just wave a hand for a glass or a refill. On stage, the sleight of hand was fast and furious during a magic show.

And if you had plucked up enough courage, you could have your future (love life and what not) foretold by a fortune-teller. Or, something less dangerous, you could have gotten your caricature sketched.

Mr Wee is President of Stamford Tyres, which is listed on the Singapore Exchange, while Mrs Dawn Wee is Executive Vice President.

The evening was lit up by a Filipino, guitar in hand, crooning hits that went back to when many guests were  teenagers or young adults, such as Song Sung Blue

(Neil Diamond), Annie's Song (John Denver), and Heart of Gold (Neil Young). And, most appropriately, he also belted out You’ve Got a Friend (Carol King) -- many of the guests are long-time friends of the Wees, as well as long-time business friends.

Which is not surprising, since Stamford Tyres has grown its presence in Singapore since the 1930s, and now has a tyre distribution and sales network covering more than 30 countries.
